Citroën SM Espace [1971]

Heuliez

Based on the Robert Opron penned SM platform and displaying a strong language consistent with the French carmaker’s cues, Heuliez’s 1971 design offered a primary point of difference. The central spine to the vehicles roof – not dissimilar to other targa models of its time – offered reinforcement but also served as a conduit whereby slatted aluminium roof sections could retract inwards. This very novel solution forwent the need to stow away roof panels, with Heuliez producing two prototypes – one with a large open-glazed rear screen and the other (as pictured) with a horizontal vent type detail as popularised by the Lamborghini Miura and other earlier models.
