Hillman House [1950]

Dr Henry Epstein

Imagery: Max Dupain

Dr Henry Epstein belonged to a vital contingent of European architect émigrés (most famously Harry Seidler) who assisted in the establishment of a true Australian Modernist movement. The Hillman House has many of the markings of a Modernist, Corbusian-type residence with bands of horizontal glazing, expansive roof terracing and slender columns supporting overtly rectilinear volumes. With respect to the interiors, Epstein paired his architecture with beautiful joinery work by furniture maker and designer Paul Kafka, who is himself responsible for some of the most notable designs of the time.
