Le Car Van [1979]

A modified version of the Renault 5 designed by Michel Boué, Heuliez’s Le Car Van presents a very French take on the American panel van. With the 5’s rear window pair replaced with large, unglazed sections articulated only by small bubbled openings, Le Car appears immediately miniaturised. With a branded spare wheel relocated off-centre to the rear hatch and appointments such as thick shag carpet with vibrant Polaroid-esque decals wrapping the exterior, Heuliez unwittingly encapsulated both time and place with its design.
