Lifeguard Station [1968]

Müther’s engineering firm was established in 1963 and led to the production of some fifty works across Germany (and scattered commissions elsewhere) which permitted a pioneering of a new construction technique to give birth to concrete hyper shell structures. These space-age forms, much like his singular Lifeguard Station, provided him with much-needed dispensation within the GDR during the Cold War but arguably limited the application of his methods to pavilions, community centres, restaurants and the like – and away from private residences.
