‘What was once science fiction is now science fact’ reads an advertisement for Tomy’s successful consumer robot lineup of the 1980s. With Omnibot 2000 as its premium offering, the Japanese entertainment company looked to capture widespread fascination with artificial intelligence, packaging advanced consumer technology up into the bodies of playful, humanised plastic robots. The 2000 model, with a cassette deck to its torso, headlamp eyes and a motorised arm is able to playback commands, project music and serve drinks all whilst moving around the home.
