Snyder House [1952]

Bertrand Goldberg

The Snyder House was designed for John Snyder, the Chief Executive of the Pressed Steel Car Company that produced a number of Goldberg’s designs including his Unicel freightcars and Unishelter homes, the latter of which this House heavily draws its prefabricated components from. These components were built from a natural plywood which formed the exterior and contrasted heavily with a sizeable stone fireplace and the glass/steel composition of the main living space. As pictured, this design’s crowning detail is a dramatic cantilever which glides over Long Island South, adjacent to a man-made beach.
