Texaco Gas Station [1936]

Arne Jacobsen

Jacobsen’s Texaco design stands proud as one of the most utilitarian Class A Historical Monuments, still functional to this day and able to be visited in Skovshoved to the northern outskirts of Copenhagen. Affectionately termed the paddehatten (‘mushroom’), the functionalist exterior is dominated by a rounded awning of almost-impossible thinness, coupled with a similarly slender vertical element that rises towards the canopy centre. Designed as a standard model for Texaco, this was the only structure of its kind that was realised.
