Van Wassenhove House [1974]

Juliaan Lampens

Juliaan Lampens, a Belgian architect known for his modern compositions, developed a style of residence that borrowed a material palette from Brutalism and open spatial planning from mid century Modernism, acutely fusing these to generate a new bunker-like typology of concrete, glass and timber. His Van Wassenhove House, now owned by the University of Ghent, displays a remarkable fortitude through its shear faces that either offer a direct vista through to the landscape surround, or close this off to bounce light, channel views and offer seclusion.
