Aarhus City Hall [1941]

Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller

Aarhus City Hall, or Rådhus, is something of an anomaly. Famously completed whilst the small Danish town was suffering from the binds of Nazi occupation during the Second World War it was designed previously by Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller following a competition in 1937. Their design which takes the traditional clock tower form, splits it into three massing volumes and binds a rigid grid system to the façade has since become emblematic of the golden age of Danish modernism.
