Altona Council Chambers [1963]

Robert Warren’s design for the City of Altona was one of many schemes proposed throughout his career that detailed a dome, a shape placed within Australian vernacular through Canberra’s Academy of Science building by Roy Grounds. Warren had actually submitted a proposal for the Academy commission which was later awarded to Grounds and so his work for Altona represented a realisation of many years of experimentation. An arcaded dome of concrete shell construction sheeted in copper, Warren’s design demonstrated the newly formed (and since abolished) City of Altona’s progressive philosophy and today is heritage protected as an emblem of Australian modernism.
