Bonaventure Hotel [1976]

Imagery: Phil Donohue

Architect John Portman is remembered best for crafting miniature worlds into his American hotels, with the Bonaventure exemplar of an ethos that aimed to provide massive experiences within the safe confines of building perimeters. Famously referring to these spaces as the ‘internal lung’ of his designs, the Bonaventure’s atrium contains fountains, restaurants and stacked balconies accessed of curvilinear circulation pathways that carry the facade’s geometry inwards.
