With only an approximate 400 units made, sound electronic manufacturer Clairtone’s Project G nonetheless found itself alongside the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Hugh Hefner – forging a Canadian design legacy. Produced 1964-67 and priced at the equivalent of over $20 000 (CAD) today, this was an exceptionally high end product popularised not by sales figures, but rather appearances in film that cemented the G’s place within the chronology of mid century, space age design. Displaying a profoundly reduced, volumetric geometry with a rectangular rosewood prism to the centre of anodised aluminium spheres, Clairtone’s website tracks the known location of several remaining and highly prized models.
