Designtel - Lowes House, Rudolph Schindler

Lowes House [1922]

Rudolph Schindler

One of Rudolph Schindler’s earlier and lesser-known works, the Lowes House was initially drafted within Frank Lloyd Wright’s firm (where Schindler worked) before Wright withdrew from the job and Schindler delivered it for the Lowes family in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles. Regarded as a trigger for the Modernism that was soon to engulf the neighbourhood, Schindler’s design demonstrated a progression in his concrete experimentation. Since demolished, the design exhibited the architect’s geometric infatuation with a series of rectilinear volumes that intersect and facades that concentrically step inwards to articulate openings.
