Matra Murena [1980]

Antonis Volanis

An aerodynamic, compact mid-engined sports car penned by Greek designer Antonio Volanis for French automaker Matra, the Murena was produced in small numbers from 1980-83. Its shape reminds of other models of the time (notably the Lancia Montecarlo) but the Murena was not without its own quirks, in particular an interior arrangement that places three adjacent seats to the front row to allow for luggage storage above the engine behind. To combat rust issues that plagued a previous model, the Murena body panels are of fibreglass construction and its chassis was hot-dip galvanised, with Matra claiming this process to be a production car first.
