Noyes House [1958]

Eero Saarinen

With a centrepiece affectionately termed the ‘Jetson’s Lounge’ by students of Vassar College (whose campus the Noyes House graces) this Eero Saarinen design represented a departure from the Victorian/Edwardian stylistic tendencies of college halls – in favour of a distinctly futuristic, modernist design to thrust students into a new time. Completed in 1958, Saarinen’s curvilinear form, acute landscape integration and furnishings (almost all of which are attributed to the architect) have immortalised Noyes as an emblematic icon of its time.
