25 May Sport Centre [1975]

Ivan Antić

‘The only thing I have always wanted was to have geometrical form, pure form. A rational form’ – Ivan Antić

Following the design of Belgrade’s Museum of Contemporary Art, Ivan Antić had become one of the most internationally renowned architects of socialist Yugoslavia, known for his daring forms facilitated by advanced construction methods. The 25 May Sport Centre, built to the river bank beneath Kalemegadan Fortress, was designed as a multi-purpose, Olympic-grade venue, built in a single year and sporting a shell-like roof structure never more than 140mm deep. Falling into disrepair over the years, Antić’s design was recently renovated by 4OD7 Arhitektura.
