Birmingham Rotunda [1965]

Jim Roberts

A glazed cylindrical skyscraper designed by Jim Roberts, the Rotunda has been historically polarising from the time of completion. Derided then lauded for its modernity, the twenty-five storey office building was famously designed to have a rotating restaurant to the top floor (with the floor’s weight suspended off the building core) which was unfortunately removed from the brief during construction. Since converted for residential use by Glenn Howells Architects, the Grade II listed building has been fully refurbished with Roberts involved with this process.
