Satellite Towers [1958]

Luis Barragán and Mathias Goeritz

One of Mexico’s first large scale public artworks, the Torres de Satélite (Satellite Towers) offer distinct parallels to the reduced, coloured forms and spatial sensibilities of Luis Barragán’s architecture. Joined by acclaimed Mexican-German artist Mathias Goeritz (who initially desired the Towers to be painted in orange shades as pictured before rendering them in primaries with white), the forms also mirror abstract simplicity displayed across much of his portfolio. Today the Towers stand integrated into popular culture and are emblematic of a modern, forward-looking Ciudad Satélite where they are sited in Naucalpan to the north of Mexico City.
