Exemplars of the space age or ‘googie’ architectural movement, Emmett Shipman’s coffee shops (in particular the Westwood location pictured) typify the infusion of rocketship optimism into the mainstream mid-century consciousness. Ship’s was as famous for its angular styling, dramatic arrowhead logo gesturing to the beyond as it was for the placement of a toaster upon each table.
