University Village [1966]

James Ingo Freed and I. M. Pei

A complex of three thirty-storey in-situ cast concrete towers designed by James Ingo Freed in collaboration with I. M. Pei for NYU, the University Village typifies mid-century, high-density residential excellence and stands as a prominent feature of lower Manhattan’s skyline. With deeply recessed glazing revealing load-bearing facade grids and a pinwheel arrangement to the superblock’s plan with a central courtyard that sites a sculpture by Carl Nesjär and Pablo Picasso to its core, the complex has since received landmark status.
